Our ROOTS
Adjusting Lives Healing Hearts, Inc. (ALHH) was founded from lived experience—not theory. After navigating incarceration and reentry firsthand, our founder recognized a painful truth: people returning home are often expected to succeed without access to housing, employment, healthcare, or credible support systems. The hours and days immediately following release are the most critical—and the most neglected. In 2013, Gaylisa Carr established Amie Lee’s Heart, a for-profit company named in honor of her mother. The company was created with a clear purpose: to provide employment opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals and people seeking a second chance. Amie Lee’s Heart hired justice-impacted individuals for cleaning positions across Ohio, offering stable work, dignity, and a pathway forward when few employers were willing to do so. The success and demand for this work made it clear that employment alone was not enough—people also needed structured support, advocacy, and guidance during reentry. Building on this foundation, Adjusting Lives Healing Hearts, Inc. (ALHH) was formally established in 2018 to expand peer-led reentry, recovery, and stabilization services. Today, ALHH serves justice-impacted individuals and families by providing support at the point of release, 30-day follow-up engagement, and community-based referrals—led by people who have lived the journey themselves.
